The Ultimate Alaskan Combo
Offering an opportunity to double your catch, Combos are an excellent way to maximize your day. Targeting two species, we offer an array of combinations throughout the summer. Catch different types of rockfish and see their magnificent colors. Hook a salmon and prepare for a chaotic and exhilarating fight!
Why choose just one species when the Gulf of Alaska offers so much variety? Our Combo Charters are designed for anglers who want to maximize their time on the water and their freezer payload.
By strategically breaking the day into two distinct fisheries, we offer the chance to battle giant Pacific halibut and then switch gears to target aggressive pelagic species like King Salmon, Silver Salmon, or vibrant Rockfish.
How a Combo Trip Works
A combo trip requires an experienced captain who deeply understands tide swings, travel times, and feeding behavior to ensure you are in the right spot at exactly the right time for two entirely different species.
- Phase 1: Bottom Fishing (Halibut)
Typically, we start the morning running offshore to our proven halibut grounds in Cook Inlet or Kachemak Bay. Using heavy tackle and scented bait, we anchor up and wait for the distinctive heavy thumps of halibut moving in on the scent trail. - Phase 2: The Transition (Salmon/Rockfish)
Once we’ve secured our halibut limits (or the tide dictates a move), the deck changes completely. If we are targeting salmon, we deploy the high-speed downriggers and transition to trolling alongside steep underwater cliffs or migratory lanes. If rockfish are the secondary target, we switch to lighter jigging rods, casting grubs over rugged underwater pinnacles. - The Reward: You get to experience two entirely different styles of Alaskan sportfishing in a single day, returning to the Homer Harbor with a beautifully diverse catch of white, flaky halibut and rich, red salmon or delicate rockfish.
Seasonal Availability
Because different species migrate through Homer at different times, our combo targets shift dynamically:
- May – July: Halibut & King Salmon
- July – September: Halibut & Silver (Coho) Salmon or Rockfish
*(Note: Combinations are strictly subject to current ADF&G regulations and open-days. Wednesdays are closed for halibut fishing, making that an ideal day to book a dedicated Salmon trip instead!)*
Where & How We Fish
Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet. Morning halibut grounds then transition to salmon trolling lanes or nearshore rockfish reefs.
