WINTER KING SALMON
Target feeder King Salmon in the crisp waters of Kachemak Bay.
Chasing Chrome: Spring Feeder King Salmon
March and April are widely considered some of the most beautiful months to navigate the waters of Kachemak Bay. The legendary summer fishing crowds have yet to arrive, the towering mountains are completely snow-capped down to the tideline, and most importantly—the massive Feeder King Salmon are aggressively hunting in the bay.
If you are willing to brave the crisp Alaskan spring air, you will be rewarded with some of the finest, most peaceful, and highly prized fishing that Homer has to offer.
What is a \"Feeder King\"?
Unlike salmon that are staging to spawn in rivers, \"Feeder Kings\" are actively living and hunting in the saltwater. Because they are constantly running down massive bait balls of herring and needlefish in the cold bay, they are highly aggressive biters.
More importantly, because their metabolisms are peaked from active ocean feeding, their flesh is incredibly rich in omega-3 oils. A fresh caught, chrome-bright Winter King Salmon is universally regarded by locals and chefs alike as the absolute best-tasting salmon on the planet—far surpassing the quality of summer river-run salmon.
The Troll: How We Target Kings
Trolling for Winter Kings requires absolute precision and high-tech gear.
- The Gear: We deploy specialized, heavy downriggers to drop our lines exactly to the depth where the baitfish are schooling.
- The Bait: We use a carefully curated spread of brined herring, flasher arrays, and spoons designed to mimic desperate baitfish.
- The Strike: When a 30lb Feeder King hits a trolled herring, the downrigger clip snaps with a sound like a rifle shot, the rod tip buries into the water, and the fight is on. Expect massive, acrobatic leaps and blistering reel-screaming runs before you finally slide the net under a true Alaskan trophy.
Where & How We Fish
